What is a teleprompter?

More than once you must have wondered how television presenters manage to deliver the news so flawlessly or how politicians give their speeches so fluently. Sure, we're talking about professionals, but even they all rely on the help of a teleprompter!

A teleprompter, also known as an autocue (or sometimes referred to as a "cue," "prompter," or "electronic prompter"), is a device consisting of a screen or mirror that allows a person to follow their speech or text while delivering it. It is a reading tool designed to provide support, confidence, and reassurance to speakers.

Typically, a teleprompter is operated with a foot pedal, similar to a car's accelerator, and it is the speaker themselves who controls the text scrolling speed. However, there are also situations where a dedicated professional handles the mechanism — a cue operator who must be able to input and manually control the reading speed using a special wheel, in cases where no pedal is available.

Podium or Presidential Teleprompter

Used in situations where the speaker faces a live audience, such as talks, speeches, or presentations. The device features a glass panel positioned at the speaker's eye level, supported by a mast or stand similar to a microphone stand. This glass is transparent from the audience's perspective but has reflective properties from the speaker's side. At the base, a computer screen is placed — or in the latest generation of teleprompters, an iPad or Android tablet.

In some cases, two teleprompters are placed, one on each side of the speaker, both synchronized with the same text, allowing the speaker to look in both directions for a more natural delivery. Podium teleprompters are positioned 1.5 to 2 meters from the speaker for comfortable and fluid reading.

Studio Camera Teleprompter

This type of teleprompter is used in all kinds of television productions: live news and magazine shows, game shows, pre-recorded programs, commercials, and more. The autocue sits right in front of the camera lens, where the text is projected and updated as the presenter reads. Like the podium version, it uses a type of mirror that is transparent on the camera side and reflective on the other.
